Sun City Resort (off the R556, North West Province, Sun City) – located 2 hours (200 km) northwest of Johannesburg, this is the gambling and tourist enclave that was the subject of a celebrity-laden anti-Apartheid campaign in 1985 (whose campaigners, which included pop stars like U2’s Bono, Bob Geldof and Bruce Springsteen, produced a song that was named after the resort).
Nowadays, it still exists (indeed it’s grown) as South Africa’s answer to Las Vegas in scale and ambition (and some would say gaudiness, too). Everything from plush resorts to casinos, safaris, and amusement park-like attractions like the Valley of the Waves (its colossal water park) can readily be found here. Those interested in a visit to Sun City are urged to review in detail its website: www.suninternational.com
Suncatchers (Hot Air Balloon tours) (Hoedspruit) – every good weather morning at sunrise, balloons depart from the launch site near Hoedspruit. Offering one-hour long flights over the scenic Blyde River, these are experiences to last a lifetime. Visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee and rusks before launching, and if requested, a champagne breakfast tailor-made to you. See its website for updated info on rates and departure times: http://www.suncatchers.co.za
